Michelle Koza’s ongoing practice of journaling shows unintentional compositions, graphic patterns, textures, and emerging visual structures on each page that speak of the wordless aspect of writing. In its most unconventional form, her writing serves as a testament to the power of expression as a therapeutic tool, revealing the intricate interplay between the neurological and psychological aspects of the writing process. On August 8, 2023, in Lāhainā, Maui, Koza’s family home for nearly 100 years was tragically burned to the ground. The devastation had an undeniable impact, physically and emotionally reshaping the town’s landscape. In response to these profound shifts, she embarked on a journey to document a personal narrative that extends beyond the visible surface. Her project seeks to encapsulate the silent echoes of the past—family heritage, memories, and the intangible spirit that endures, infusing her work with a deeper exploration of the human connection to history, memory, and resilience.
